Pregnancy Physiotherapy in Edinburgh
Pregnancy physiotherapy provides specialist support to help you stay comfortable, active, and confident throughout your pregnancy.
As your body changes, it is common to experience aches, pains, and new physical challenges. This does not mean anything is “wrong” — it means your body is adapting to an incredible process and sometimes needs extra support.
With the right guidance, most pregnancy-related discomfort can be managed effectively, helping you move more comfortably and enjoy this stage of life.
Who Is This For?
Pregnancy physiotherapy may be helpful if you experience:
-
Pelvic girdle pain
-
Lower back or hip pain
-
Pain into the leg
-
Wrist or hand pain (including carpal tunnel symptoms)
-
Neck or shoulder discomfort
-
Difficulty sleeping due to pain
-
Reduced confidence with movement or exercise
-
Concerns about staying active safely
You do not need to be in severe pain to benefit — many women attend for prevention, reassurance, and guidance.
What Your Appointment Involves
Your pregnancy physiotherapy appointment lasts approximately 60 minutes and includes:
A Personal Consultation
We begin with a relaxed discussion about your pregnancy, symptoms, daily activities, and goals.
A Targeted Physical Assessment
This may include:
-
Posture and movement assessment
-
Joint and muscle examination
-
Core and breathing assessment
-
Functional movement testing
-
Pelvic floor assessment where appropriate
If you have pelvic floor concerns or would like support with pelvic floor awareness and control, this is usually assessed through observation, breathing, and external techniques.
Internal pelvic examinations are not routinely carried out during pregnancy. My approach follows current best practice and focuses on safe, effective ways to support pelvic floor function during this stage.
All assessments are adapted to be comfortable, respectful, and appropriate for pregnancy.
A Personalised Management Plan
Based on your assessment, you will receive:
-
Tailored exercises
-
Pain management strategies
-
Practical movement advice
-
Guidance on staying active safely
-
Support for preparing your body for labour and recovery
My aim is to help you feel confident in how you move and care for your body during pregnancy.
Supporting an Active, Healthy Pregnancy
Where appropriate, advice and exercise programmes are based on the latest clinical guidelines for physical activity in pregnancy.
Whether you are continuing with sport, walking, gym-based exercise, or simply managing daily life, your plan will be realistic and individual to you.
